Islamic Army in Iraq Video Shows Downed Helicopter, Survivor Murdered Over Kevin Sites Video (images--UPDATED III)

The Islamic Army in Iraq has released a videotape in which they claim responsibility for the downing of a civilian helicopter in Iraq in which 11 were killed, including 6 Americans. The Jawa Report has obtained a copy of the video. The video may be downloaded here [see April 22nd]. Extremely graphic images from the video are posted below.

The video shows the downed helicopter, which is the first civilian aircraft shot down in Iraq. In the past, the Islamic Army in Iraq has claimed to shoot down aircraft, but these were always unmanned military drones.

Of the eleven on board, one man survived, but was severely wounded. The wounded man had apparently crawled away and was hiding in tall grass some distance from the crash. The helicopter can be seeen burning in the distant background. The man's accent reveals him to be an American, not a Bulgarian or Belgian as is being reported in the press. (Update) According to this AP story, the man is positively identified as the Bulgarian pilot Lyubomir Kostov. I stand corrected. Except for the rolling of his r's, his English was perfect and American accented. (thanks to Chad for tracking this down).

Unaware of who has found him, the American says to them, "give me a hand. Give me a hand. It's broken..."

The terrorists help him up and then ask him, "Weapons?" then order him to "Go! Go!" The man is able to walk. "Carry out God's verdict," they say. They then shoot him as he holds his hand up. He is murdered in cold blood as the terrorists yell "Allahu akhbar!" shooting him over and over.

The terrorists murder the man on the video. In a statement released with the video, the Islamic Army in Iraq says they killed the man in retaliation for the "cold blood in the mosques of tireless Fallujah before the eyes of the world and on television screens, without anyone condemning them."

This is a reference to the video released by American journalist Kevin Sites showing a Marine killing a wounded Iraqi insurgent who was playing dead inside a mosque in Fallujah. The Marine was later cleared of all wrong doing. His unit had encountered this type of feigning before with tragic results.

When that video was released, The Jawa Report claimed that Sites' actions in releasing the video would directly lead to more deaths and destruction in Iraq/

Houston Chronicle:

Thursday's chartered flight was believed to be the first civilian aircraft shot down in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion two years ago. The dead included six American bodyguards for U.S. diplomats, three Bulgarian crew and two security guards from Fiji, officials said.
The helicopter went down about 12 miles north of Baghdad. Associated Press Television News footage showed burning wreckage from the craft and personal belongings scattered across a wide area.
U.S. officials could not confirm the cause of the crash. However, the Bulgarian Defense Ministry said the helicopter was struck by missile fire.
Bulgarian Defense Minister Nikolai Svinarov said today the crash was a "terrorist attack," but it will not affect Bulgaria's military involvement in Iraq.
"Bulgaria should not waver under terrorist pressure," said Svinarov, whose country has a 460-member contingent in Iraq.
A group calling itself the Islamic Army in Iraq posted a video on the Internet Thursday purporting to show the shooting of a survivor.
The authenticity of the footage, posted on a Web forum often used by militant groups, could not be confirmed. A U.S. Embassy official in Baghdad said he had no knowledge that anyone on board survived the crash and was killed later.
"Heroes of the Islamic Army downed a transport aircraft belonging to the army of the infidels and killed its crew and those on board in the regions of al-Taji north of Baghdad," the group said in a written statement accompanying the video. "One of the crew members was captured and killed."
In the footage, which shows burning wreckage and two charred bodies, militants come across an injured man wearing a blue flightsuit lying in tall grass. His nationality was not immediately known.
"It's broken," he says in accented English, apparently referring to his leg, as militants Â— unseen except in brief glances Â— tell him to stand up. "Weapons? Weapons?" the gunmen ask him in Arabic and English as he stands uneasily.
The gunmen tell him, "Go!", and the survivor starts to hobble away, holding his hands up toward them. The gunmen then open fire, shouting "Allahu akbar!" or "God is great!" with the bullets hitting his body. They fire more shots into his body on the ground.
The six Americans were employed by Blackwater Security Consulting, a subsidiary of North Carolina-based security contractor Blackwater USA, which had four employees slain and mutilated by insurgents in Fallujah a year ago Â— deaths that touched off a Marine assault on insurgents in the city.
The Islamic Army statement said it killed the survivor "in revenge for the Muslims who have been killed in cold blood in the mosques of tireless Fallujah before the eyes of the world and on television screens, without anyone condemning them." It was apparently referring to the Nov. 13 shooting by an American soldier of a wounded Iraqi in a Fallujah mosque during a U.S. offensive in the city.

UPDATE 11:40:One victim identified as Jason Obert, of El Paso. News 4 Colorado:

A former El Paso County sheriff's deputy was among the six American contractors killed Thursday when insurgent missile fire downed a commercial helicopter outside of Baghdad, Iraq, a Colorado Springs television station reported.
Jason Obert left the sheriff's office in February to earn extra money working in Iraq for Blackwater Security Consulting, KKTV-TV reported. The company is a subsidiary of North Carolina-based Blackwater USA.
Obert is survived by a wife and two boys, the station reported.

Update II 1:55: Another victim identified. Stephen Matthew McGovern, of Danville KY. Danville Advocate Messenger:

Stephen Matthew McGovern, of Danville, has died in Iraq, his family confirmed today.
McGovern was involved in a helicopter crash, according to his stepfather, who said the family was notified Thursday night....
McGovern had been a sergeant in the National Guard with the 20th Special Forces Group in Louisville. He got out of the Guard in February, according to a spokesman there....

13 Oh yeah, greg, could you show your math on that? I was never much good at figurin' numbers, but I think a billion seconds is only about 31 years. But I could certainly be wrong... just I think it would be nice to show all your work for your mismatched units. Here is my work. 1 year = about 31,536,000 seconds (1 day = 86,400) Therefore, 1,000,000,000/31,536,000 = the number of years 1 billion seconds is (31.7 years). Like I said, I could be wrong...

He was a combatant, and he was feigning death, and a potential threat. That's why feigning death goes against the Geneva Conventions-- to protect the injured party, and also a soldier who's turned his back to the injured party. When you place yourself outside the GC you can't appeal to them afterwards. I would have shot him too. Here on the other hand, we had a non-combatant Bulgarian, and his shooting was used for propaganda purposes so they could release it to the internet. I see no comparison between his killing and that which occurred in that mosque-- mosque being used as headquarters by insurgents. Shame on them, muslims using mosques to shoot at GIs from. I just want to say it sounds to me like some of the people posting here could use a little visit to Iraq in person. Go stay with our troops a little while and truely learn what it is like to be in that moment where you have to make a decision about your safety and that of your fellow soldiers. I would like to say that the marine made the right decision... regaurdless of what some think... if your were in his boots you would have done the same. What the insurgents do is in no way comparable to our soldiers. I know because my husband and his medics go out the gates everyday and care for the wounded... american AND Iraqi... old, young, friendly and enemy. Even for a soldier who has been there before ... the situation has changed... maybe he can tell you what it is like to go out searching for IEDs... maybe he can tell you what they do to our armored vehicles... maybe he can tell you what it is like to collect your soldiers in a bag because the pieces are scattered... maybe if he makes it back that is. I don't feel sorry for the insurgents I do pity the truely innocent Iraqi people who suffer through the crap but I know that when it is said and done we will have made a difference. I can't wear the bracelets of all the soldiers we have lost on this post... but I do wear the first one... Oh and as far as civilians go... the american civilians... they CHOOSE to be there no one MADE them go. Death was a risk that they took by choice our soldiers on the other hand cannot say oh sorry sir I think I am gonna sit this one out. Yes the insurgents do horrible things and I almost laugh to hear people say something about it ... like they are surprised ... then I think to myself it isn't funny... 70 I think the biggest fact that a lot of you are forgetting is that the mosque in question had already been cleared by another group only days before the incident. The Mosque had been raided, the survivors were checked and were moved into the room. Some where wounded, others dead but all were cleared of any weapons or potential threats. Later, the group with the embedded Sites came through, the marine saw that one of the wounded left behind was alive and shot the poor bastard. If he had known that the Mosque was cleared maybe he would have not reacted so abrubtly. If his superiors were doing their jobs (same goes for those fuktards in A.G.), he would have known that the situation at hand was not as dangerous and perhaps he could have avoided shooting the wounded iraqi who was probably too weak to say "im not feigning death sir, I am just too hurt to say anything". So although I can understand why a marine would react the way that dumbass did, I still think what he did was wrong. You can call me a traitor all you want but I think a mistake was made. If anything, his superior should be blamed as well. Carlos, if you saw a video with a Christian man blowing away some innocent in the name of God, what would you think? Would you think that all Christians are evil or murderes? No you wouldn't. You would think that he is a murdering sociopath. Thats what the terrorists are. Get that through your heads people. I begged the commander to pick up the phone and ok the awaiting orders to move us from this rotation but I didn't know he was already one foot out the door to his new job and no longer had time for the little guy... yep it's politics...plain and simple. My contribution to the cause it teaching soldiers combat life saver skills. Every soldier that deploys from tis post must take the course... it's like an advanced first aid... slightly EMT geared with some advanced EMT skills... It is helping save lives and I know I am making a difference it feels good to know that... Even if it is a small difference. One recent incident with the unit... the medic was injured and knocked out... those combat life savers did a great job. Just to hit a possitive note... How are you making a difference? Please excuse me when I say I wish your family didn't have to be there but since they are I wish them the best. As far as the Marine in question goes, I understand WHY he did what he did but I think it could have been prevented had his superior officer informed him of the previously cleared Mosque. I certainly don't know how it feels to have to make that decision but in this case, I feel he made a mistake. Perhaps in another similar situation a Marine does not make a mistake and ends up saving 4 of his friends. That doesn't change the fact that mistakes are made and they cost lives (civilian, troops and enemy). Perhaps it would be great if we could all pretend it didn't happen but it did. My problem is with those people who not only turn a blind eye to the mistakes made by commanding officers but they try to justify the mistakes by comparing them to the actions of the terrorists (see Abu Ghraib). These same people also like to make this war a religious issue. When they do, they are making the terrorist's day. The terrorists make these horrible videos in order to convince the world that they are fighting a holy war BUT THEY ARE NOT. It is all a political act. And with every person here who comments on how Islam is filth and this and that, then they win. That is what they want. So with that said, perhaps I feel that I can make a difference by addressing this ignorance and foiling the terrorist's plans. Perhaps I can somehow make people open their eyes and minds and see past the propoganda and the "allahu akbars" and see the murderers for what they truly are: murderers. Nothing more, nothing less. Then perhaps I can make some kind of difference no matter how insignificant it is. Unfortunately, with every snuff film that is made and distributed on this blog, my hopes are shattered. You see, when people see these things, they can't help but let rage take over them. The same happens to me when I watch them. If you don't get angry by watching these tapes then there is something definately wrong with you. But when people point there anger towards Islam then they are no better than the terrorists. Rusty says that he displays these things in order to "show the true face of the enemy". Unfortunately, the only thing the people who read this blog see is their supposed "faith". Mission accomplished for the terrorists. So that is pretty much it. The only other thing I can do is hope that this madness ends soon and our troops come back home safetly.

104 It's amazing to see the overuse of words like "terrorists" and "insurgents", when discussing the actions of individuals who are merely looking to kick illegal invaders and occupiers out. Ditto on the use of "contractors" for mercenaries with extensive military backgrounds, who make quadruple, if not more, what the average GI makes, doing pretty much the same stuff. And the outrage when these illegal invaders, not non-combatants (that's a cute line too) are dealt with. Anyone who dies in Iraq, who is not doing humanitarian work (like ms. Ruzicka) and is there as a member of the coalition troops, has it coming. Why are you morons so damn wimpy about this? If you unleash shock and awe on a civilian population for no good reason at all, don't cry foul when you are rewarded with more of the same of your own medicine! If this kind of crap had been unleashed on your city, town, village, and your neighbors, and family members were shot, harassed daily, killed at road blocks, you'd be pissing mad too! So stop whining!

105 As someone who knew one of the men shot down and most likely pictured above b/c his was one of the only bodies recovered, I hope you find enough decency to respect the friends and families who are grieving right now. We are very, very proud of him and all the troops. He was a former Army Ranger, the best of the best. He served to protect this country. Whether Iraq had anything to do w/ 9/11 or not, we are a better world b/c we are there and b/c Saddam is not in power. My friend wrote many letters about how our media does such an injustice and stretches so much truth into lies that they can not be trusted. So before some of you go believing in the Dan Rathers of the world, understnad that thousands of people are experiencing freedoms never known before. My friend was a part of that and I hope you can understand that. His memorial was today. Like I said he was a former Ranger who when he came home felt that he was needed over there. To help the Iraqi people taste the freedom we eat and drink every moment of our lives. God be with the Iraqis, the soldiers from around the globe and with the leaders of the world who truly wants the best...including PRESIDENT BUSH. He is the right man for this job doing what is right in our world. God be with him.

And I have no problem being the person that so many, even many from my own country that I have pledged to die to protect should that be deemed necessary, love to hate. That's fine, if you do just know that your right to hate me, comes from mine and others like me willingness to do the things that you people aren't willing to do in order for you to keep those freedoms. That said, some of you people deserve to be presented to these fucking cowards that call themselves freedom fighters as a gift from this country, so that we can see your face on camera as you feel the dull knife they use to kill sheep enter your neck, and see that you now realize how wrong you were. Would you really let a guy be, wounded or not, if some of your friends had been killed by wounded guys pulling the pins on grenades after US soldiers had walked by and left them alone because they were wounded? I think not, and whether you admit or not, you would have done the same thing, I know I sure would have and will if I'm ever in that situation. That Marine did nothing wrong at all, the only thing he did was to protect himself and his buddies and not take the risk of that guy killing anyone. Those Marines and all of the servicemen over there are doing things that most people don't have the balls to even think about. I can make it a lot simpler, put an american soldier in that guy's shoes. What would have happened to him if some of these so called freedom fighters had found him wounded. I don't think Islam is to be blamed, a religion by itself is just a belief, it's how the people reading that belief interpret it that screws everything up. As much as these people claim that this a holy war started by us, tell that to the kurds that were slaughtered by nerve gas at the hands of Saddam Hussein. I would love to have a face to face conversation with the moron that posted "Iraq was better off before we got there". I could go on and on about some of the absolutely idiotic and sickening statements that I've read in this post, but I will make it simple for those who still don't get it, pull your heads out of your asses and wake up. 111 I'll cut throught the BS and make it real simple. 1. We had no right to invade Iraq: Links to terrorism and WMDs are irrelevant. The day this country was attacked, it went on the offensive. Any threat, real or implied, will be dealt with accordingly for the sake of those poor people who jumped from the WTC to escape the flames. Did any of you really believe a bunch of rag-tag, camel-humping, hajis in Afghanistan were such a threat to the U.S. before 9/11? Doubt it. 2. The Iraqi insurgent in the mosque should not have been killed: Does "Insurgent in Mosque" not strike some of you idiots as suspicious? The are terrorists/cowards! They hide in mosques, shoot from behind women and children, kill ANYONE in the name of Allah, and play possum so as to shoot our soldiers in the back or detonate grenades. Its been documented in the past, and the marine in question was cleared of all charges. That guy deserved to be killed, I'm glad he was killed, and I hope that sort of thing happens every day. Anyone who thinks I am a savage, just watch a couple of those gruesome beheading videos (of innocent non-combatants nonetheless) and then tell me who the true savages are. Reconcilliation is the key to dealing with the insurgency: That is almost laughable. The only course of action is complete annihilation of these people. Is Counterterrorism Really Dying? (Updated)

OK, I'm still not sure whether I'm out to lunch on this issue of the counterterrorism report, or whether it's Larry Johnson who's missing the boat. It's certainly possible that each of us it outclassing the other on some aspect of the analysis. For the sake of argument, I'm willing to concede that the accounting method used to define a terrorist act hasn't changed at all from 2003 to 2004 and that continuity isn't the issue. I'm not 100% convinced of that, for one thing because Larry characterizes the whole debate as a "mere squabble over method," and as a methodologist, I know of no such thing. Issues of method, as I learned from Thelma Z. Lavine, go right to the heart of what we call "reality," and it just doesn't get any more momentous or important than that. But again, I'll concede the point that the method hasn't changed, and also that the State Department attempted to change it, failed, and then cancelled the Annual Report. more...

Sixty years ago, the United States military invaded Okinawa on April 1, 1945, the last bastion of the Japanese maritime empire that stood in the way of an assault on the mainland. Operation Iceberg was perhaps the largest combined land-sea operation since Xerxes swept into Greece, involving more troops than at Normandy Beach Â— 1,600 ships, 183,000 infantry aand 12,000 aircraft. More than 110,000 skilled Japanese troops, commanded by the brilliant Gen. Ushijima and buttressed by another 100,000 coerced Okinawan irregulars, were ready for them. Despite the most terrible naval barrage in history, and an ominous unopposed initial landing, almost everything imaginable then went wrong. The ravaged island was not to be declared secure until a little more than a month before the final Japanese surrender. In just these few weeks before the end of the war, 12,520 Americans were killed Â— well over twice as many as were lost at the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and in Afghanistan and Iraq combined. In all, more than 33,000 more American s were wounded and missing. Perhaps another 200,000 Japanese soldiers, Okinawan auxiliaries and civilians died in the inferno. Luminaries were not exempt. More often they were perplexed that we went ahead with Okinawa when the weapons to prevent such a traditional bloodbath were on the immediate horizon. Are there any lessons from the nightmare of Okinawa for the present age? For all the horror, stupidity Â— and sheer courage Â— of the campaign, American firepower, training, adaptability and bravery prove eventually a match for zealots and suicide bombers, whether on Okinawa or in Fallujah. For all the talk of the softness and decadence of modern Western man Â— whether the hot-rodders and soda jerks of the late 1930s or our own Jasons and Jeremys with rings in their ears and peroxide hair Â— the free American soldier proves far more lethal than those who blow themselves up. Operational mistakes and intelligence gaffes are the stuff of all wars Â— whether the failure to count accurately the enemy on Sugar Loaf Hill or in the Sunni Triangle. 50-70 Bodies Found in Tigris

Last week we brought you the story that Sunni terrorists were threatening to kill 100+ Shiites from the Madaen area. We later reported that it was a hoax. Well, it's looking like less of a hoax today.

Dozens of bodies, some of them beheaded, were found washed up on the banks of the Tigris river. I've seen low estimates of 50 and high estimates of 70. Still up in the air is whether these bodies are those of the Madaen hostages, as Iraqi President Jalal Talabani claims. The US is denying any knowlege of the bodies, and reports indicate that many of the bodies were found before the Madaen hostage crisis was announced.

At the very least, the confusing nature of this story reveals that Talibani is no different than other Arab leaders in his ability to spread what are essentially rumors as fact.

Well, Somebody's Weak Grasp of the Issue, Anyway (Rapidly Updated)

Larry Johnson, the fellow who broke the original story that the State Department was tucking its tail between its legs and dropping stats on the number of terrorist attacks, because the number increased from 2003 to 2004, has posted an "update," on the Counterterrorism Blog that seems to counter the contention that the data method changed before the State Department cancelled the report. (He contends that they tried to change it themselves, while they contend that they tried to revert to the old method for the sake of continuity.) He seems to be saying that the only change is that the State Department has decided to ignore the data because it's disagreeable, but others have suggested that they've decided to ignore it because a new method used to compile the numbers loses continuity with the old statistics, and that therefore the apparent increase isn't real. And if you read what he says carefully, he doesn't quite make the assertion that their version isn't true. He just blusters about it alot. What's going on? Enquiring minds want, and need, to know?

2 To clarify. In my first posting on 14 April I was trying to give Condi Rice the benefit of the doubt. Since then friends inside the intel community have alerted me to the fact that Rice and company tried to get the NCTC to change the methodology to produce a smaller number of attacks. This is more than mere squabbling over a methodology. The NCTC is still using the same definition of a significant terrorist incident (i.e., someone is killed, wounded, kidnapped, or there is property damage in excess of $10,000). The fact that State Department, who does have the lead and still maintains the responsibility for international terrorism, decided to cease publishing an annual PUBLIC report that provided both summary and analysis about the state of international terrorist activity is cowardice. You are free to believe otherwise, but friends on the inside tell me this was pure political cover their ass punting.

3 Larry: Sorry, I didn't see your comment earlier. I'm, frankly, a bit mystified by what the issue is supposed to be. If, as you say, the number of attacks really is up then I guess the State Department can be faulted for something, but I'm not sure what. Having egg on their face, maybe? Basically what the State Department brings to the table is the legitimacy afforded an "official" report, though to tell the truth that legitimacy has relatively little impact on me or those like me, who are inclined to distrust the State Department anyway. Do I want the State Department in the lead on counterterrorism? Well actually, no I don't. I don't trust them. Given their historical preference (or should I say "addiction") for stability I just don't think they're the right department for he job. But even if they were, they may not be the right department to publish this report, and certainly the fact that the NCTC keeps the data, doesn't mean it's unavailable to the State Department. Now, if you're saying that they intend to willfully ignore empirical data in the formulation of policy that's something else. Par for the course for the State Department, but very atypical of Condi Rice. I'm pretty skeptical of that assertion, though I can be convinced.

The term "mere" suggests that methodological issues aren't substantive, which suggests to me that you don't quite grasp what those issues are about. Now, you seem to be saying that the method hasn't changed... and if that's the case then you've got a point (though I'm still not clear about the implications of it). But I'm sure you know that there's more to defining terrorism than the level of harm, whether of persons or property. And the troublesome part of any definition will be how you specify intent, because merely defining it by harm will include lots of criminal acts that have to political intent at all. Again, I don't want to be a pill, but I'm rather impatient at all the stuff that's apparently missing from this discussion. Is the definition of a terrorist exactly the same as it was in 1993? That would appear to be the only decent starting point for an informed discussion.

Terrorism isn't a method of expressing grievance and its objective isn't violence, it's control... of you. And for greyrooster, I agree that we should increase the pressure, but we still need to know whether the attacks are actually increasing in order to make those decisions. Larry seems to say that the method hasn't changed, which may be true (though I need some proof). But the apparent number of attacks could also increase because people are reporting more events in terms that meet the criteria. In other words, people are more aware of the phenomenon of terrorism and are therefore reporting more events that fit the description. This is an old problem in following crime trends. Finally, the number of terrorist events would increase as people become more politically free, because the old methods of social control through state terror no longer work. And in addition, totalitarian governments are usually pretty effective at controlling both crime and rival totalitarian gangs. What we're seeing, at least to some extent, could easily be greater competition among totalitarian movements for the opportunity to control compliant populations. And in that sense what's happening in Iraq (and to a lesser extent in Palestine) is critical... because they represent populations that are unwilling to comply with totalitarian prescriptions any longer.

Initially I did not know whether this was a result of a change in methodology or not. As I said, I wanted to give Rice the benefit of the doubt. I have now learned that State Department did not want to go public with the statistics because the numbers are up dramatically. Consider for example that the number of international terrorist attacks in Iraq alone in 2004 were 191. Remember that in 2003 there were 175 attacks worldwide. From a policy perspective this means that the "progress" in the war on terrorism may not be progress at all. In my initial analysis I pointed out that the scope of extremist Islamic activity may be on the wane. Compared to 2003 I believe (but have not seen the firm data yet) that fewer countries experienced significant attacks in 2004 from groups tied to Al Qaeda. Nonetheless, when you add up several terrorist attacks in Russia (the bombing of two planes for example), the 3/11 attack in Spain, hotel bombings in Egypt and Indonesia, and the fatalities in India and Iraq we are likely to see a death toll that could approach 2000. The numbers are going in the wrong way. I think you are misinformed on what State Department's role is. I know of several cases over the last four years where State Department recommended military action and the Department of Defense vetoed the idea. Methinks you watch too much of Fox News. Best LJ

Their diplomats have worked actively to counteract the impact of the GWOT on the states they live in. (In Pakistan, the Ambassador refused to hand out flyers seeking bin Laden, for example.) You may be able to find isolated examples where State is arguably more aggressive than DoD, but the pattern is clearly one of appeasement. Please don't insult our intelligence. We may not have your contacts, but we're perhaps a bit more skeptical of their motives than you.

As you know, it's entirely possible that there could be other explanations for a false accounting of an increase in terrorist attacks. There might, for instance, be a reason why more attacks are reported relative to the total. Better reporting isn't a change in method. In addition, if the original method were mis-specified and included a subset of events that were not terrorist in nature it's possible that an expansion in the number of non-terrorist events might be falsely interpreted as an expansion of terrorist attacks, even without a change in method. Not that any of this has happened. As you point out, it's reasonable to think that a jump in terrorist attacks in Kashmir might be connected to an internal conflict within Pakistani Intelligence. But does the decision not to publish the report automatically mean that State has decided to keep itself in the dark? If you can figure that dynamic out, so can they. And, as I said in another post above, it may simply be that State doesn't want to handle a report that is so closely associated with advocacy rather than policy. They may simply regard it as an unnecessary and counterproductive distraction. From a policy perspective this means that the "progress" in the war on terrorism may not be progress at all. It's not clear to me that there's anything like a direct correlation between the number of attacks, and the success of the strategy, at least in the short run. Indeed, Victor Davis Hanson has an excellent piece that argues just the opposite, and that's not only empirical but logical... from one of the great military historians of the present age. By your logic, fighting a bully is a mistake because he's likely to hit you more often for opposing him. It would also suggest that U.S. Grant ought to have turned north after the Battle of the Wilderness, instead of pursuing Lee to Appomattox. But I agree that the embedded information might be very important to policy formulation, and that it oughtn't to be ignored. I think you are misinformed on what State Department's role is. The bottom line, though, is that I don't think it's necessarily alarming or even a matter of concern that State is no longer publishing this report. That case hasn't been made convincingly.

So, a group of Muslims travels to Canada to go see neo-nazi William Baker speak at a conference on Islam. They are detained by US border agents and questioned. Then they are let go. So, what exactly is the problem here. Sounds to me like someone at Border Patrol is finally doing their jobs!

American Muslims detained at the border as they returned from a religious conference in Toronto sued the Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday alleging they were targets of ethnic and religious profiling.
The five Muslims, all U.S. citizens, say customs officials detained dozens of others from their conference in December, subjecting them to interrogations, fingerprinting and photographing. Four carried U.S.-issued passports; the other had a New York state driver's license, which is an acceptable form of identification at the Canadian border.

Boy, those border guys are real brutal. I mean, imagine border agents taking some time to subject members of the religion of peace to photographing and fingerprinting. Abu Ghraib! Torture!! Geneva Conbention!!!!

The plaintiffs traveled separately and arrived at the checkpoint throughout the afternoon and night. Travelers who told agents they had attended the conference titled "Reviving the Islamic Spirit" were held for questioning, and women wearing hijab were asked whether they had attended the conference, according to the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court by the New York Civil Liberties Union and the Council for American-Islamic Relations.

Because nothing screams not an extremist more than wearing a hijab. And the nerve of law enforcement agents asking a woman if she had attended a conference. Outrageous!!!

Tabbaa, who wears hijab, said that at 2 a.m. Dec. 27 she arrived at the border checkpoint where agents asked her about the conference and instructed her to wait inside the customs building. Inside, she said, "I saw all the people from my Islamic community."
Tabbaa, a Syrian-born naturalized citizen, said agents refused to let her leave unless she submitted to fingerprinting. After several hours, she said, a female agent escorted her to a room to demonstrate the procedure.
"She just grabbed my hand and [began] fingerprinting it," Tabbaa said. "I was just forced to do it. She grabbed my hand."

She grabbed your hand? No!

American Roy Hallums was abducted from his temporary Baghdad home on November 1st, 2004. He was in Iraq as a civilian contractor working on rebuilding efforts. His mission had everything to do with helping the Iraqi people rebuild their country after decades of war, mismanagement, and terror under the Saddam Hussein regime.

I had the opportunity to have several e-mail conversations with both Susan Hallums and Carrie Hallums Cooper recently. They have graciously agreed to letting us interview them. What follows is part 2 in a series of interviews with the family of Roy Hallums. Part 1 of that interview can be found here. This segment continues the interview with Susan Hallums.

Susan is Roy Hallums ex-wife and the mother of Roy's two daughters, Amanda and Carrie. Susan is in the process of selling the small house she inherited from her mother. Rust Shackleford: Ever since we crossed paths I've been following your story and have read that you are in constant contact with the wife of Roberto Tarongoy [a Filipino who was taken hostage with Roy]. Would you like to tell us anything about that relationship? Perhaps there is something you would like to say on behalf of the Tarongoy family?

RS: Have you had any contact with any of the other families of hostages being held in Iraq? Jeffrey Ake, Tim Bell, Bill Bradley, or Dean Sadek, or Mohammed Monaf? If not, is there anything you would like to say to them if you could?

SH: No I havent . I called Jeffrey Ake's company and told them to please call me if they would like to talk to me. That I have been in these terrible shoes for 6 months and if I could help in any way please call me. He has my prayers and hopes that he is released right away. 1 Ms. Hallums has an excelent point. I think we may be letting these hostages down some. I'll be keeping Mr. Hallum and the others as well as their families in my thoughts and prayers. It may be that they are taken one by one or in small numbers so the media doesn't get all excited like with the Iranian hostages. We should all express some support here so Ms. Hallums & family can see it.

Berlusconi Resigns

It's not exactly what you think. This is a procedural resignation, he'll be back as PM right-away. Guardian:

Silvio Berlusconi, faced with mounting criticism over Italy's sluggish economy and its involvement in Iraq, resigned Wednesday as premier but vowed to quickly form a stronger new Cabinet to restore confidence in his leadership.
Resigning and then immediately shuffling the Cabinet is an old trick of Italy's complicated political system, and has been used by premiers to strengthen faltering coalitions.
Berlusconi, who had presided over Italy's longest-serving government since World War II, had so far resisted the move, sensing it would dent his image as a new-style politician. On Wednesday, he suggested he would have preferred not to resign.

Zarqawi's Al Qaeda in Iraq May Have Nuke

Collin sends me this Washington Times story, but the info in it is not new to The Jawa Report. Ever since Zarqawi's base of operations in Fallujah was discovered, reports have been trickling in that he might have WMD capability.

For awhile Zarqawi actually claimed to have WMD, but those claims seemed to have been more bluster than anything else. And Zarqawi did attempt to make chemical and biological weapons in Fallujah.

I seriously doubt this story, though. If Zarqawi actually had WMD capability, why has he not used it? The only thing that keeps me from dismissing such stories out of hand is the possibility that Zarqawi is trying to bring the war to the U.S. Something bin Laden has suggested to him.

The story claims that the device is in Afghanistan. A possibility, since Zarqawi was in that country prior to coming to Iraq. But again, it still seems unlikely.

I'm much more inclined to believe that Zarqawi or his people are spreading the rumor that they have a nuke. You know, it just makes him look that much more macho. What, you think cutting off a few infidels heads were going to keep the population from turning him in for this long?

Man Arrested for Spitting on Jane Fonda

Police said they arrested a man for spitting on two-time Academy Award-winning actress Jana Fonda during a book-signing stop in Kansas City Tuesday night.

Notice how the paper sets the story up by making Fonda out to be a sympathetic character? This is what Chomsky's Propaganda Theory calls 'Framing' and 'Selection'. Factually the story, so far, is correct. Nevertheless it is biased.

At about 9 p.m., police said, a man who had been waiting in line for about 90 minutes, passed a book to Fonda and then spit a large amount of tobacco juice into her face.
They said the man then ran away and was taken into custody by off-duty officers, who were providing security for the event.
Fonda declined to prosecute the man.

How utterly magnanimous of Fonda. Of course, the city doesn't need Fonda's permission to prosecute the man. So he'll wind up in the pokey for a brief stint or pay a fine.

Ok, so in order to be fair, after the story is already framed, they throw this in the last paragraph:

In 1972, Fonda was photographed sitting in a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft tank. About her involvement in the Vietnam War, Fonda has apologized for her anti-aircraft tank photo. She has called it an incredible lapse in judgment.

A lapse in jugement? Right. As I've said a hundred times before, traitors rarely think their acts of treason are really that bad.

They eventually realized that the GOP was the true home for bigots when Strom Thurmond switched and ran for president on an pro-segregation platform. That spirit is still alive in the GOP, as indicated by Trent Lott's comment on how better off we'd all be if Strom Thurmond had won.

The sincere drive by the GOP to get minorities into the highest ranks of power is a very recent one. Previously, the GOP has worked against this. Hate, hate, hate, hate, hate... the strength of the modern Democrat party. On a page devoted to the celebration of someone spitting tobacco juice in Jane Fonda's face to express hate, this is probably the most hypocritical statement you could have made.
